Extending a gable roof can be tricky since it involves working on the roof but you may be able to do it yourself if you only need to add 1 2 2 inches 1 3 5 1 cm.

We love the look of the no overhang scottish style roof line as well. You will need to do this at the other end of the roof as well. They are essential for framing and shading windows reducing splashback and getting rain to fall far enough away from the foundation. For a relatively average house with a 1 500 square foot roof the total of underlayment and tiles will equal something approaching 8 tons in weight.

Your tiles will need a 1 inch overhang and the eave and a half inch head lug to the rear of your tile. Roof overhangs might look relatively routine but there is a lot of design thinking that goes into creating the optimal dimensions for each one. With the west east overhangs the main use is siding window protection and keeping rain snow from foundation. The fairly cheap and common shingle roofs that many people have are quite light.

Too much overhang and the shingles could blow off in high winds. Subtract 1 1 2 inches from your first mark and make another mark on the underlayment. With our house we are planning minimal east and west overhangs and ample south and north overhangs. We will protect shade the west windows with cedar awnings grates.

If you are transitioning from a light roof to a tile roof the weight difference will be substantial. Too little can allow water to seep into rake or fascia boards.
